Transit in Tahoe

unedited 2/09 Tahoe Mt. News

South Lake Tahoe officials are contemplating what action if any to take against Area Transit Management, the company that used to run the city bus system.
“I know they owe us a lot of money and owe a number of parties in the basin,” City Manager Dave Jinkens said.
But a potential court battle may be multifaceted.
“From what I have been told they have taken out a claim form,” Jinkens said.
That’s required before any litigation goes forward in California.
ATM owner Andrew Morris did not respond to a Tahoe Mountain News email as of press time so it is unknown what the company’s intentions are.
State law gives the city a few months to decide what course of action it wants to take. City Attorney Cathy DiCamillo is assessing the situation to determine how much ATM might owe the city and will ultimately make a recommendation to the City Council.
“I can tell you they owe us for franchise fees that were not paid and for buses that their company took apart. Cannibalized is the term that was used,” Jinkens said. “We are tough on going after people who owe us money. We have closed down businesses, filed civil actions and taken people to court.”
